英米人なら誰もが知っているマザーグース。世代を超えて伝えられている英語の伝承童謡で、ナーサリーライムとも呼ばれます。シンプルで滑稽だけれど深い意味が隠されています。このシリーズは３冊で８４のマザーグースが収録され、うれしいCD付き。我が家では本を開いて、CDをかけて、描いて、歌って、ピアノで弾いて・・・と大活躍。洋書を読んでマザーグースのフレーズに気がついたなら、ネイティブに近づくこと間違いなし。

”猫にバイオリン、牛が月を飛び越え、子犬がそれを見て笑う。お皿がスプーンと一緒に逃げ出した。”

これは私が最も面食らったマザーグースの１つ。政治風刺だったり、星座を意味していたりと奥には深い意味が隠されているらしいけれど、あまり深く考えずに楽しく歌いましょう。

<One, two, buckle my shoe>１から２０までの数え歌。

One, two, buckle my shoe;

Three, four, knock at the door;

Five, six, pick up sticks;

Seven, eight, lay them straight;

Nine, ten, a big fat hen;

Eleven twelve, dig and delve;

Thirteen, fourteen, maids a-courting;

Fifteen, sixteen, maids in the kitchen;

”小さな蜘蛛さん、配水管を登って、雨が降ったら、流された。日が出て、雨が乾くと、小さい蜘蛛さん、又配水管を登る。”

英会話スクールでカナダ人の先生が教えてくれた手遊び歌のマザーグース。左右の親指と人差し指を交互に合わせて、蜘蛛が登ったり下りたりします。

<Hush-a-bye, baby>

♬Hush-a-bye, baby, on the tree top,

When the wind blows, the cradle will rock.

When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall,

Down will come baby, cradle and all.

”木の上の赤ちゃん、風が吹いたらゆりかご揺れる。枝が折れたら赤ちゃんもゆりかごも落ちる。"

赤ちゃんの子守歌で、Rock-a-bye のバージョンもあり。メロディーが気に入って子供の寝かしつけの時歌っていたけれども、よく詩を読むとマザーグースによくあるちょっと怖い展開です。核戦争を題材にした　レイモンド・ブリッグスのアニメ映画　”When the wind blows" は、このマザーグースから。
