かわいいカピバラがペットとして家にやってきたらさあ大変
マイブームはカピバラで、書評も好評なこの絵本を早速入手。ロサンゼルスのある一家のところに、ペットとしてカピバラがやってくるというお話です。白黒の挿絵が魅力的で、知らない単語があっても子供向けの絵本なのであっという間に読めます。突然カピバラが家に来たらこんなだろうな、と想像できるような愛らしいエピソードが満載。プールで泳いだり、家族とソファーでくつろいだり、お気に入りのシャワーを浴びたり、背中を孫の手で掻いてもらったり・・・と前半はとてもいいストーリーが続きます。

After a full day of eating and swimming, Capy joined us for the evening in the family room while we read or watched television. He took his place on the love seat with his head on Margret's lap while three miserably jealous cats prowled in the background.
やがて食欲旺盛なCapyboppyは、すごい勢いで成長して大きくなり、だんだん手に負えなくなってきます。昼間は家族と楽しく過ごしたCapyを、夜は一人でガレージで寝かせようと毎晩ひと騒動。いやがるCapyはどたばた暴れて逃げ回ります。
ある日、男の子を噛んでしまった Capyboppy。怒った息子の Steve に思いっきり蹴られ、プールの底へ投げ飛ばされてしまいます。え？蹴っちゃうの？ 家族は茂みの陰でうなだれて動かない Capyboppy を庭に作った小屋に移しますが、Capy は２日間も飲まず食わずで動きません。最後は、やっと元気になった Capyboppy を動物園へ送るという予期せぬ展開でした。（これ、”おさるのジョージ” のカピバラ版？)

ドングリを探しに旅に出るMasakoと猫たちの冒険物語。
Masakoは７歳の女の子。ある日彼女の部屋に11匹の猫が迷い込みます。でも、一番小さい子猫のTabbyは大切な光るどんぐりをなくしてしまいました。Masakoと猫たちはドングリを探しに旅に出ます。 旅の最初にいとこの猫Popと出会い12匹になった猫たち。仲間たちが向かうのは、森、海の底、アフリカ、strange city、途中からRobby とMarkも旅に加わります。さらに動物たち、cat-eating witch、宝の地図、それに magic short-cut door・・・。さて、どんぐりはどこに？
Chapter 1より～ある日Masakoの部屋に１１匹の猫が
There was a girl. Her name was Masako. She was 7 years old.
One day, when Masako came back home, there was a cat in her house. She was surprised and asked, "Who are you?"

2003年、弱冠７歳の著者が１年かけて書き上げた夢の冒険物語で、愛らしいタッチの文章で綴られます。夢いっぱいの空想の世界で冒険は繰り広げられ、最後どんぐりを見つけられずに家に帰ると、机の後ろからなんと光るどんぐりが・・・。１２匹の猫が作品に順番に登場し、最後の結末に向けてきちんと筋立てが出来上がっていて、７歳の頭の中でどんな構想を練っているのでしょう。将来の活躍を願わずにはいられません。

Chapter 33 最終章より～旅を終えたMasakoたちが部屋へ戻ると。
First, she cleaned under the bed. Next, she cleaned the floor. And lastly, when she cleaned behind the desk, she was surprised and shouted,
"Here is the acorn! The acorn!"
All the cats gathered.
"Yes, it is the acorn! It's shining!" said Sally.
"Tabby, this is your acorn, isn't it?" Masako picked up the shining acorn.
"This is it! It's mine, mine!" shouted Tabby.
"We found it, we found it!"
They were delighted. The acorn was shining beautifully, and so was everybody's face.

少年がモンスターとの戦に挑む冒険物語。
少年Jamesは、ある放課後手紙で呼び出しを受けると、そこへ待ち受けていたのは、Man-eating flower。飲み込まれてしまった彼は、次々に現れるモンスターとの戦に挑み、勇気ある冒険を始める。2002年、10歳の著者が１年がかりで仕上げた傑作品。
少年は冒険と戦いが好きである。舞台の設定はイギリス。Man-Eating flower に飲み込まれた11歳の少年Jamesの冒険物語が始まる。Chapter ごとに新しいmonsterが現れ、出合った仲間と共に挑む。敵は、seven-headed-green dragon、 giant-fish monster・・・。そして物語のキーは、手に入れるエメラルド、サファイア、ルビー、ガーネット。複雑な展開が結びつく最後は圧巻で、著者の豊富な知識と発想力に脱帽。今後の活躍にエールを送りたい。

CHAPTER 4 The First Duelより～
James と seven-headed-green dragon の戦い
Next James punched one of the dragon's seven heads, and that head hit another one, and that one hit the one after that , and so on. The dragon got very angry and each head started to fight, but they each became tired little by little.
At last, the dragon fell down.
"Now is my chance!" James thought.
Kicking the dragon's breast as hard as he could, James's foot stuck into the dragon's body. The dragon screamed and then it melted into a puddle of green. It got smaller and smaller, and changed into a piece of emerald. James put it in his pocket.
